Who does what in the UCSB Recycling Network?

UCSB Recycling Committee

Mary Ann Hopkins

The UCSB Recycling Committee (chaired by Mary Ann Hopkins, Physical Facilities-Recycling) was created in 1990 in response to the large volumes of recyclable material generated on campus without a coordinated program or collection strategy. The committee is composed of staff, faculty, and students; representatives from the offices of Budget and Planning, Facilities, UCEN Dining Services, UCEN Operations, Central Stores, Housing Environmental Office, Associated Students Recycling Program, Community Environmental Council, and the County of Santa Barbara. This group meets every three months to hold roundtable discussions relating to waste reduction, re-use, recycling and "closing the loop" through the purchase of post-consumer products. We also share ideas and offer assistance to each individual program with the ultimate goal of reducing the amount of waste generated by UCSB that reaches our landfills.

The A.S. Recycling Program is a student funded and student run program on campus that established the outdoor beverage containers and newspaper recycling program in 1994 under the direction of Mary Ann Hopkins. ASRP services all of the outdoor recycling clusters by bicycle and cart. As well as running the outdoor recycling, ASRP focuses on waste awareness outreach throughout the UCSB campus and at other schools. ASRP has also worked with Associated Students Legislative Council, and the University’s Administration to promote and encourage recycling, waste reduction, and the purchase of recycled materials. Yearly ASRP holds Green Awards for UCSB faculty and staff. Winners are publicized in our 93106 flier.

A UCEN employee recycling committee was formed to promote recycling within the UCEN. The UCEN mixes trash and recyclables. The Material Reclamation Facility owned by the Marborg Company then does a separation of the materials. Physical Facilities - Recycling 805-2661 x.2302 The Custodial Department will take your "office pack" from the green office pack recycling containers in main office areas or copy rooms to a blue locked "office pack" dumpster. These dumpsters are locked for three safety reasons:

•For security of documents, since shredded documents do not recycle well. (However 100% security cannot be guaranteed)
•So contaminants will not be thrown into "office pack" dumpster.
NOTE:Cardboard dumpsters are available for occupants of the buildings. They are placed behind the buildings near the office packs and the dumpsters.
Flattened cardboard only please!
•For fire security.

Central Store Furniture

Central Stores 805-893-3470
By stocking recycled products wherever feasible, the UCSB Storehouse promotes the purchase of products, thereby completing the loop on recycling. Bids require suppliers to quote recycled products, and publications highlight such items. Prices have been reduced recently to stimulate their sales. The Furniture Services division of Central Stores handles the disposal of surplus property for the University and attempts to divert as much as possible away from the landfill. A metal recycling bin captures the items with metal content; most other equipment is sold to scrap buyers, and all pallets and cardboard boxes are picked up by a recycler. Furniture surplus along with e-waste is also another component of Central Stores recycling.
