Tye Simpson, Director of Campus Planning & Design, 805-893-4244
Tye Warren Simpson is Director of Campus Planning and Design. The Office of Campus Planning and Design is recipient of several State and professional planning awards and is responsible for physical planning, environmental assessment, regulatory approvals, and long-range development planning.
Tye has served as an officer of the Board of Directors of the Citizens Planning Association and Community Housing Association and periodically a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, Congress for New Urbanism, American Planning Association, Association of American Geographers, or Society for College and University Planning.
A graduate of UC Santa Barbara, he has been invited to lecture at California State University San Luis Obispo, Occidental College, and UC Santa Barbara and has been a private planning consultant for redevelopment agencies and financial institutions. Tye is an avid paraglider pilot and when wind conditions are unfavorable he can found in the gym as Head Coach (Floor Hockey) for Special Olympics or at home with his wife and three children.
Wanda Williams, Assistant to the Director, 805-893-8430
Wanda has worked for the University in various capacities since 1983 when she left her job as an operator for The Telephone Company to begin a new career as a key-punch operator. The last few years she has served as the general office assistant and Assistant to the Director (the only person in the Office who has actually key-punched his own card decks.)
Wanda is the Office receptionist and responsible for calendar and scheduling, as well as answering and directing telephone calls. She serves as the message clearinghouse and does word processing and data entry with Microsoft Word and Excel. Wanda's the one who orders and monitor supplies, sets-up meetings, obtain conference rooms, and keeps everyone in-line. She also maintains the general and project filing system, including the Office Library and the main Campus Planning & Design Library.
On Saturdays for the last 10 years you can find Wanda in the basement of Bank of America's main office in Santa Barbara. Where she is their Safe Deposit Specialist.
Patricia Carbajales, Geographer/GIS Projects, 805-893-5599
Patricia is the Office specialist in geographic information systems (GIS), as well as other cartographic and digital media programs. She is adept at applying planning principles to advanced database management and cartographic applications for planning analyses, project approvals, and presentations. Patricia also supervises consultants in the development and integration of GIS data into campus mapping standards and trains departmental staff in GIS principles and techniques.
Patricia is a Forest Engineer with an engineering degree from Madrid, Spain and holds a Masters Degree in GIS from the first graduating class in GIS from the University of Redlands, California. A "crazy good" ping-pong player (make that "table tennis"), she is becoming an avid paddler of outrigger canoes.
Shari Hammond, Senior Campus Planner, 805-893-3796
Shari is a Senior Planner in the Office of Campus Planning and Design with primary responsibility for implementing the environmental review and regulatory process for campus development projects. She works extensively with the California Environmental Quality Act and California Coastal Act and represents the Office and University with resource agencies and community groups.
Shari holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Barbara and a Master of Arts degree in City and Regional Planning from the California State University, San Luis Obispo. She has previously worked for the County of Santa Barbara and in the private sector as an environmental scientist before joining UC Santa Barbara in 2002.
Shari is married and mother of 2 beautiful daughters (Maia and Amoreena) as well as a competitive endurance trail runner.
Steve Conner, Senior Campus Planner, 805-893-4091
Steve joined the Campus Planning & Design group after a few years as an Associate Planner with a multi-disciplinary design firm in San Luis Obispo. An undergraduate degree in forestry led to graduate work in geographic information systems. Steve took his Bachelor of Science from The College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and then a Master of Arts degree in Geography (Rural and Town Planning Option) at California State University, Chico.
Steve's primary responsibilities include working on environmental and regulatory reviews for campus development projects including CEQA and some California Coastal Act duties. He has recently earned the designation of water detective for his tenacious dedication to figuring out University water uses and restrictions.
In his spare time, Steve enjoys the outdoors by commuting on bicycle, surfing, hiking, and spending time with his 5 year old son.
Dennis Whelan, Senior Campus Planner, 805-893-7009
Mr. Whelan has been part of the professional planning staff for over 17 years. He arrived at UCSB as an undergraduate in Art Studio, graduating in 1979 and earned a Masters in Architecture from UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning in 1985. He is a licensed California Architect and member of the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Certified Planning.
Mr. Whelan's planning duties involve the development of the physical facilities, from buildings and landscape to roads, bike paths and graphics by working with design professionals to ensure a cohesive and organized campus.
He has been a docent at the Lotusland Garden Estate in Montecito for 8 years, and currently an Executive Board member of the Southern California Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. Mr. Whelan also trains and competes as a national and international champion sculler.
